So, I told you all that my friend Sean dreaded his hair last week or so. He asked me to come over and help him fix some of the lower ones on his neck. Well, when I got there I almost cried at the sight of it. Sean spent 25 bucks to have his friend (who is a stylist and wanted to learn how to do dreads and had never done it before) to put two bottles of whatever the fuck it was in his hair and twisted it all up and half ass back combed it. Seriously, the only reason why I had a small amount of trouble pulling those things apart was because they were sticky and nasty. It took this girl 6 hours to do pretty much nothing, and it took me two hours to redo all of them with my hands and make them awesome. She needs to ask me how to dread if she is going to charge people for it (or anyone for that matter).

That is all..

Hello everyone!

My name is Ellen. I'm 18 and I'm from the suburbs of Chicago. I've been lurking on and off for a while (and occasionally commenting).

I've wanted dreads for quite a while, but decided to be kind to my dad and wait until after his wedding in February since I've had my arm twisted into being a bridesmaid.

So, sometime in February, I will be dreadified.

I have two questions.

First off, backcombing + palmrolling vs. twist 'n rip + palmrolling. I've read about both, but most people seem to be in favor of the backcombing. Why is that?

Secondly, I ride horses. And wear a riding helmet to keep my noggin somewhat safe. Has anyone here had issues with dreadlocks not fitting under helmets (be it for biking, rockclimbing, whatever?). It seems like dreads would be a bit bulky to try to squeeze a helmet over.

Thanks so much!
