I was at GameStop with my boyfriend the other day, chatting it up with the sales guys about Halo 2 and such, and two black men (no disrespect to anyone, I am NOT racist) walked into the store.
I had my dreads tied back, and I turned around to notice that these two guys were really close to me.
One said, "Aw, no shit...she's got dreads!" The other said, "Can I touch them?" And I said, "Sure!" So they touched them, then one told me they looked really nice. I said, "Thank you! I'm so jealous of you guys because you can just put them in and they're near perfect..."
They replied with "You shouldn't be jealous. Anyone can have 'em."
It just made me feel so good! Where I live, there aren't many dreadheads, in fact I'm the only one I know of in town, and usually, if I go somewhere, I usually get odd looks from everyone, including black men and women. But it just made my day.
Also, I spotted a white dread head at the laundromat last night while making a beer run. I wanted to go in and say "Hi!", but I had previous engagements so I couldn't.
And today at the grocery store, an older woman said to me, "I love your hair, honey." I said "Thank you!" and that was it.
I had to post all of this because like I said, I live in a small town and a small area, and usually such "outlandish" things like dreadlocks, piercings, ink, etc., usually gets a lot of stares. But the comments from the two black men in GameStop made me feel so good about my dreads.
Hope you are all well and your dreads are happy, like mine :D
