Hey, I'm new, my name is Marine and my dreads are about a month old now.

This is when they were about two weeks old, I still had the rubberbands at the tips and the roots.

This last week has been really frustrating for me because I'm not very good on maintenance and my roots and tips are looking pretty messy right now; I started to get discouraged and almost decided to try and take the dreads out through the painful method of conditioning and brushing... but then I realized what a stupid idea that would be.
Now I'm back to my normal senses and loving every single dread on top of my head; well, almost every single one, you know.

does anyone have any dreads that they'd be willing to give away? i don't know what i could give you in return, i could give you weird stickers that came with my calander, a painting i did, uh, buttons, bells, pins. i don't know. if you tell me, i'm sure i can find something. but if anyone does have any dreads, just email me at

I've gotten lots of well, I don't know - compliants or something from friends that think I am disrespecting certain cultures because I have dreads...

anyone else? How do you handle it?

Have you heard, there's a rumor in St. Petersberg!

The other night, a few friends and I got together to watch the animated film Anastasia. Anyway, we made some pizza, ate rabbit sausage, and were all feeling a tad punchy when we took these pictures. In anycase, there ended up being a few decent shots of my dreads. If anything else, they're all highly amusing.

As for the quality of my dreads: they are looking quite horrible, but much better than before. I've kind of left them to their own devices and aside from the roots, they seem to be coming along nicely.

Color Pulse Hair Dye

Has anyone here used L'Oreal Color Pulse temporary hair dye?
I want a temporary change (temporary only to appease the retail/food service gods should the color turn out too intense)  but am concerned that the mousse may contain conditioners that would really set back my 10 week old dreadies.
I'd love the opinion of someone who has used it.  Now, of course I would do a test no matter what people say about it, but I don't want to spend the money if someone here knows that it would be a bad idea.

Alternately, sjhould anyone know of any temporary (8-10 shampoos or so though I know thats not super accurate for dreads) dyes other than this one that comes in fairly vibrant colors, let me know.  This is the only one I found.

so this will proberbly sound really stupid but someone told me that when you make up a salt spray you can put coconut in it instead of the lemon. however i'm unsure of this because i don't think coconut would be good for hair...

anyways i was just wondering what you guys thought about that.

thanks, Matt xx

spa crazies?

Hi :)
Another new girl here ... you can go look at my journal to find out more stuff about me but - you will have to comment first if you want to read most of it, as most posts are locked to friends only. damn stalkers :P

Now there is this issue that I am having -

I am so hoping that someone here might have experienced the weirdness that is my hair at the moment. I don't have pics of it so will try to be descriptive as possible.

I have long (middle of my back length) thin (about pencil width) dreadies. They have been doing their thing for about 4 and a half months now - pretty naturally, every now and then I put the dreaded wax in them and for the most part leave them to do as they please. My hair is generally pretty healthy. The dreadies aren't particularly tight yet but hold together nicely, and I think they are coming along as "normally" as expected.

Now.... About 10 days ago I died my hair, which was fine and has been done before so I didn't think there would be too much of an issue with it this time BUT I went and played in a spa for a few hours this past Friday evening and the strangest thing happened.
There was a lot of swishing around in the water, no chemicals in it, aside from some bubble bath which I dont think would have done too much damage. but in the morning, when they had pretty much dried, every single one of them has shrunken up with around ten loops flattened into them. My hair is sitting almost shoulder length so that is about 4 or 5 inches of shrinkage and the loops will come down somewhat if you rip at them a lot, but there are still a *lot* in there and are heaps worse at the back.

Any ideas as to what could have happened here? I am thinking it must have been something to do with the heat of the water and the hair dye residue, that maybe glued them together?

Your thoughts on how to pull them back down into a length somewhat resembling their former state would be appreciated as well. If I rip at them too much is it going to weaken them a lot?

*edit* It is the loops all through them that is the issue here - not so much the shortening*

Thanks so much. Xposted in dreadlocks and the knottylocks forum.
