Why does life always interfere with me having dreads?

I just started cosmetology school. I had my dreads for about 2 weeks. I get there and im told that we will have regular practice on each other, including hair washing, dye jobs, cutting, etc. I quickly raise my hand and ask in my meek little voice, "what about dreads?"...

Question

Okay, I've been lurking around here for about a month because i've been wanting dreads for about that long. I finally was ready to do them tonight, but after one i failed horribly. Neither I nor my boyfriend who was helping me knew exactly what to do, and i ended up crying and having to comb out the dread. now, my hair completely knotted up, that was the easy part, what we couldn't figure out was to get it to hold in a tight manner. unable to find wax anywhere, we settled for shea butter, which i have read can also help. i twisted and palm rolled the hell out of the sucker, but the roots would not stay tight for the life of it. has anyone had similar experience and/or a solution?

formal looks for dreadlocks

Alright!
I am on a mission to find as many "formal" looks for dreadlocks as possible. This is always a concern for people starting dreads, keeping dreads, and well... doing their hair.
So, I checked the memories and didn't seem to find much, and so- here I ask for any "formal" looks you've done with your dreadlocks.
Weddings, homecomings, proms, Holiday parties, celebrations of any sort, etc. etc. etc. etc. what's your look!?

All I've got is the "pomp" bangs with hair tied back and to the side. It's really not "fancy" or anything, but it's the best that I can do for now.

Now please show me yours!
Go! thanks
