I-Search [12 Mar 2008|11:29am]
Hello!
First off, I wanted to introduce myself. My name's Cole. I don't have dreads--yet. I will be starting them shortly after family portraits this spring (my mother wants to be able to do them outside and for us to all look well enough that my relatives will still speak to me... thank goodness I am in the 'cool' family), and most likely I'll be backcombing them. I've curly hair, which is neither thick nor thin (though it definately has body). I'm 18, and a freshman at my local community college.
Feel free to add me as a friend, just let me know if you do. :D

Alright, now to the real reason of my post.

I have an English class, and for which I must write a research paper. It's not something that's extremely formal. In fact, the teacher prefers to call it an "I-Search" paper, because we are basically required to research something that we as the writers are interested in, or rather, I need to write about something that I am interested in. I'm interested in dreadlocks.

My reasonings are, I would love to explore the histories of dreads, as well as present to as many people in this class as I can the wonderful things that dreads involve. I was thinking of approaching the paper in a "Myths & Facts" style. By doing this, I think that I could present the care of dreads, history, different methods... The list goes on. I also planned on using this community as a source, and would credit you all properly.

Now that you know all that, what would you like to see in a paper about dreadlocks? Anything you want to say? Focusing my paper a little further may or may not be a good idea, but I'm completely open for suggestions.

Also, if anyone wants to peer edit it, or simply receive a final copy of it, I would be more than willing to email it your way. [:

Thanks for your time!

Anybody want purple extensions? [12 Mar 2008|02:06pm]
[ mood | happy ]

So I have these purple synth hair I dreaded up. I only used like two of them, so I've got quite a few. I was wondering if anyone would want to trade me for some? I'm pretty much set on weird colors in my hair, so I was thinking beads or misc. nifty things. If you just really want one I'll still send it to you regardless, but I thought I'd see if I could strike a good deal somehow :)

My stupid webcam doesn't do the color justice, but at least you get an idea.

It's not an "electric" purple...more of like a cornflower purple? If that's even possible. Either way, they felted in easily to my hair, the tips were almost automatically locked tight, and after the initial felting I haven't had to do a damn thing for them. I'd say they're roughly three inches long. Great for convenient pony tails without hair ties:

hello [12 Mar 2008|03:48pm]
Hey guys, Ive been wanting dreads for a long time now and finally decided i should do it. Ive always admired them a ton but i guess never had the commitment to start them.

My hair isnt too too long yet (probably about 7 inches) and i was wondering if i should go for it or grow it out some more first. My hair grows pretty fast so i figured it wouldnt matter if they're not as long bu thought this would be a good place to get some (much needed) dread advice. Ive been using soap in my hair for the past few weeks now either way. I could post a more recent picture tonight if that would be more helpful.

So I'm  *thinking* about letting my pixie cut grow out so I can start my dreads again.

However, this time I'd realllly like some help so that they get a good start in life ;)  Just wondering if there's anyone in the community that lives around or in Kentucky that would be willing to help me out in say, 8-9 months?

What can I say - I like to plan ahead.

sup [12 Mar 2008|09:20pm]
[ mood | lethargic ]

Okay I've been lurking here since early 07'  but had them done in Aug of 06 (backcombed).  It's been around 19 months in and here's the timeline. I was inspired by a post a few weeks ago about asian hair, and since my fam is  filipino descent, I think that qualifies me as having an asian hair type.

So they are twelve days old today. Almost two weeks. I showed them to my friend that has dreads today, so this is why I'm posting. He likes 'em! Plus, a guy asked for my phone number. Ha ha. It's the dreads...
First pic - roots are beginning to be loopy and get harder, second shows most of them (sorry, I'm trashed) and the third is just for fun and because I'm a crazy, hairy weirdo!
and sorry, I don't know how to make links to more photos. :(

i've run into another little problem with a few of my dreads. they are knotting up at the root and the tips, but not in the middle. its like it starts as one dread splits into two, then back into one. alittle advice please...
