Graveyard

New dreads started!

I just started my new set of dreads. I only have one dread down in the back. Took me a full hour. I think speed will pick up as I remember how to do it. :) One dread down, MANY to come!

I went to a photog drinking party last night with me class mates. We had a bunch of back drops up to take some pics (since thats what we do!) and here's my fav!    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

Sheep-headed cannibals

I found this funny and disturbing 1920s sideshow picture on the internet. It's these two black albino brothers that were under the name "Ecuadorian Sheep-Headed Cannibals" or "Ambassadors from Mars."
But sheepheaded, how silly. I wonder, if their hair and skin was actually dark, would the white people in the crowd still know what dreadlocks were or at least recognize them?

Quick question!

My question to you is this: Is there a difference in how quickly locks mature based on their starting length? Do longer dreads knot slower and shorter dreads more quickly?

I've been growing my hair out to dread it. Right now it's brushing the tops of my shoulders and just a hint longer in front than in back. (Been growing out a swing bob and trying to even it back out.)

I want to dread my hair after Xmas. That will give me a little over 4 months to go through the terrible fuzzies before I have to face my grandmother (after spring semester ends) and try to make a case to her as to why I've done this to myself. Ha! She already thinks my nose ring makes me look like a "damned aborigine." I've hidden my lip ring and my tattoos from her, but I won't be able to hide dreadlocks. She'll probably have a cow over my hair. (You know, I am in grad school for sociology and anthropology. I might be able to play it off as "I'm changing my appearance in preparation for participant observation research... I want to blend in." Maybe? Ha! That would be a riot!)

My husband knows I long for long, thick, ropey, mature locks that I can pull back in a lazy ponytail. He thinks I should wait another year and dread next year after my hair has grown out another 5 or 6 inches. I've been waiting over a year already and I'm going mad!

I'm trying to decide if I should do it or wait. Honestly, if my short dreads will lock up and look presentable more quickly, I'm probably going to just go ahead and do it after Xmas. It will be easier to show my face to my disapproving grandmother if I can somehow minimize the fuzz/rats nest/unkempt look around her. Probably going to wear a headwrap anyway, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
