|root thinning question

I have recently returned from a job at a summer camp, it was great fun (and there will be many pictures coming once my friends load them). However, I have noticed that my roots are thinner than I remember them being and I am beginning to become concerned about them breaking off in the future. I looked all through the memories and couldn't find what I was looking for, but feel free to call me a daft bastard and send me back over there if I missed something...
Some information, my dreadies are a little over 2 years old and are medium-fatties, I do very very very little maintenance (I sewed in some hairs months ago) and don't dye them. I don't have pictures of the problem (if it even is one) and I suspect that it was caused by having to wear them up most of the time when chasing after children.
The tips are now pretty large in comparison with the top 6 inches or so of the dreads. Does anyone know of a remedy? Unless someone knows of a trick or has a good suggestion, I'm going to leave them be and see what happens. I'm not freaking out, I'm just curious.
I'm assuming that leaving them down or in a tam will help because there will be less pressure on the roots being pulled in a certain way.
(I don't think root rubbing would be good since it does tend to damage them and the issue isn't them knotting)
