Deep clean at 8 months

Hey everyone. I haven't posted in a couple of months. My dreads are about 8 1/2 months now. I'm so loving them! They're a bit crazy but many of the insane loops have gone away. These past few months I haven't really done any maintenance. I've just let them be (thanks to the advice on here) and stopped worrying about loops and kinks. And yes, you wonderful GUDU folks were right! lol The loops are going away on their own. And where they were, the dreads are way stronger than anywhere else.

Lately they've been feeling a bit icky. I can't really describe it other than they just didn't feel clean, even after washing them. I wash my dreads with baking soda about 1-2 times a week. The rest of the week, when I shower, I just put them up in a bun to keep them from getting wet. Sometimes I wash them more if they feel like they need it.

But lately, it seemed that they just weren't clean enough. So I decided to try deep cleaning them. Boy what a difference! My dreads finally feel clean! YAY!

Basically what I did was what the memories suggested. I took a big bowl (want to get one of those bed hair washy thingies) and filled it with warm...almost hot...water, added baking soda, lemon juice, and salt. I don't have any tea tree oil or I would've used that too. Then I soaked my hair in it for about 45 min, squeezed out the hair really well, and was thoroughly grossed out by how gross the water was (it was a greyish brown).

Then I took a shower. I rinsed my dreads and squeezed out anything left inside each individual one. Then I made a paste with more baking soda and water and palmrolled it into each individual dread. Did the rest of my shower and then rinsed really really really well after.

I'm so happy that they're so clean now! I have to look in the memories to see how often you guys do this. I want to do it once a month but not sure if that's OK or not. If it is, then I'm doing it. I'm a pretty clean person and the thought that all that gunk was in my dreads....yeah I don't want that.

Anyway, here are some pics! Collapse )

As I said, I love how my dreads are coming along. I've thought about doing some maint on them but truthfully I sort of love how they're doing their own thing. lol

5 year birthday

Gifted them with a new color. I was platinum blonde for a couple years, then about a year and a half ago, I started dying them black. So, along with the birthday post, I'm here to show that dying your dreads black isn't necessarily a life sentence. The color above was achieved after one color stripping (Color Oops) and after a week of rest, one 40vol bleaching.
