Creation: I started them about 3 nights ago just backcombing in haphazardly created sections to make pretty thin dreads. Now I have super super fine and absolutely pin straight hair so I wasn't sure how well they'd stay in.
Day One: Sure enough they were all very very loose and I spent most of the day twisting and teasing to try and get them to stay in. That night I re-backcombed almost all of them and used a salt water spray to try and roughen my hair up--my hair also tends to be on the oily side.
Day Two: They looked dreadlock-like and seemed to be staying in fine, except for a few scraggly ones in the back.
Day Three: But I wook up this morning, and even though I sprayed them with salt water again and was pretty careful with them and kept them up well yesterday (I've been twisting at the roots and tips on each one...not really palmrolling, just twisting repeatedly in one spot, it seems to help a little bit) they are all loose and seem like I could brush most of them out with my fingers.
What I really need is advice. Should I brush these out start fresh? This time backcombing a little more tightly and making sure my hair is really really really clean and as dry as I can get it beforehand.
Or should I just try and rough up what I've got but also be careful not to let them get all pulled out? Should I put them in something to sleep--that's when they get messed up most?
I'm fine with them looking like whatever, and I'm in no rush, I'm just worried that the way they are now they're either never going to dread or they're just going to all fall our in a couple weeks.
