minty deep clean/tea soak and acv rinse.

If I'm entirely honest, I'm not sure what possessed me to do this.

I had dry/flaky/itchy scalp and possibly quite a lot of build up in my hair. I fancied doing myself a deep clean but I didn't have any tea tree oil (and I'm broke) so I thought "hm, a lot of dread stuff has peppermint in it. I wonder what peppermint tea will do to my hair?" (they sell peppermint tea in our local discount shop for 19p [38 cents]) Anyway it turned out ok so I thought I would share.
Boil a pint of water, and put it in a large bowl with a teaspoon of salt and 2 mint teabags. (I was just going to brew the tea at this stage, but I thought I'd better put the salt in as well because I didn't think it would dissolve in anything other than boiling water.) Stir it til it looks like the salt has dissolved, and then leave it a little while to let the tea brew, I think I gave it maybe 5 - 10 minutes. Remove the teabags.

Add 4 teaspoons of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Stir until most of the fizzing has stopped.

Do not be alarmed at what you are left with. My girlfriend said it looked like fizzy piss. This was quite accurate!

Head to the bathroom armed with a few old towels and some sort of mug or cup. Seriously. This stuff stains, I don't know yet if it will wash out of the towel I used. Get naked (unless you want to ruin your clothes). Put the bowl in the hand basin and proceed to pour the mixture over your dreads and scalp using the cup. This stuff will sting your eyes and taste bad, so try not to get it in your eyes or mouth. repeat til your hair has had a good old soak, and then put on a shower cap and wrap your entire head in a towel (it keeps any leakage from dripping down your body.)

Ok so I left this on my head for maybe 45 minutes. I was aiming for an hour but I got impatient. During this time I also diluted some ACV for afterwards (again I had some lying around so I thought I may as well try it). It was supposed to be 1 part ACV to 8 parts water, but I think it may have been a little stronger than that, maybe more like 1:6.

So after 45 mins (half an hour, an hour, whatever) remove towel and shower cap. At this stage my hair was a little stained from the tea, but this probably only happens to people with super white bleached hair. Don't be alarmed, It seemed to rinse out fine anyway.

Get in the shower for a good old scrub. I basically rinsed my hair til the water ran clear, gave it a good lather of dishsoap (or whatever works for you), let me hair rinse some more whilst I did my usual shower thing, and then gave it another lather of dishsoap.

Then I poured the dilute ACV over my scalp, gave it a little rub, and left it on for a minute. Again I had meant to do it for longer, but I was pretty offended by the vinegary smell.

The end result? Nice tight dreads and a non flaky, non itchy scalp. I tried the deep clean once before and found that whilst it worked well, it left my hair feeling dry. Right  now my dreads feel kinda soft and healthy whilst at the same time feeling very tight. To be honest I don't know whether it was the tea that did that, or the very brief acv rinse. I guess it would be a lot easier to use peppermint oil, but each to their own. Oh also, there was a whole load of wax residue in the plug hole after I had finished in the shower. Good to know that isn't in my hair anymore! Also my hair is maybe a little darker than it was before. Who knows? I don't mind anyway.

Hope you enjoyed reading. Have a good rest-of-weekend everyone.
