question and (newbie intro post)

i wanted to just say hi and i'm getting a little break from my job for the next 6 months (it's my sabbatical) and i've always wanted to try dreads but was never in a situation where they would have been appropriate attire (except for college), but i was a rebel then.

so, my question is that if you guys think that its worth it to get started for six months and also how long in your experience it takes for them to grow back out when i have to go back to work. i know i've been reading FAQ's out the wazoo, and i'm thinking of going ahead with it, but wanted to get opinion from the experts.
