Just spent forever trying to dye some dreads...
What I'd wanted was bright, pure red, but I live in an ittybitty Maine city, and a dye like Manic Panic was nowhere to be found... so I bought the brightest, reddest "regular" dye I could find. Put a shower cap on, poked some holes, pulled out some dreads. Put some bleach on them. Kept it on there for an hour before it did much of anything -- my hair is a wicked dark brown -- but finally it was something like blonde, so I rinsed and blowdried them. Then we put the red in and left that on for nearly half an hour, rinsed that for-fucking-ever, until the runoff was clear. Put it up in a towel for a bit, then went to blowdry.
(don't mind my ginormous fugly shirt)
So they are rather brownish-orangish... they're a bit more red than they look in the pictures, but barely... they'll probably look more red in natural sunlight though, I bet. Eh. I'm not a huge fan of the color, it's a bit disappointing, but I still like the effect, I guess. Tell me what you think, honestly.
My sister helped me dye them and she's a bit of a retard, and she left a couple inches at the roots of most of them. Oh well, right? And there is a dread or two that is still sort of bleach-blonde-y because of wax -- the bleach was all waxWHAT? and went right through... but the red was all like nosiree and just sort of DIDN'T dye that part of the dread. So there are a few that are like, half blonde. So if you're thinking of dying your dreads -- BEWARE OF WAX. Oy.
But, prom -- mine was a few days ago, Friday -- my friend fooled around with my dreads for a bit, and finally found a way that stuck. First she wrapped random ones in ribbon to match my dress, and then just twisted them all up and pinned it with (a ridiculous amount of) bobby pins. I'm not sure exactly what she did, since I just had to sit there and all, but here's what it looked like from the back (duh)
edited with a picture of the front of me, so you all know that though I may make goofy faces, I'm not as deformed as I look in those other pictures
